This week on the show, Tim Mather and Kyle Roderick from the social media beer app, Untappd, join us in the studio for another round of Going In Blind–Flagship February edition. If you haven’t heard about Flagship February yet, it’s a social media campaign created by beer writers Stephen Beaumont and Jay Brooks, and designer, Porter Hughes to promote the flagship beers that often get overlooked by beer drinkers seeking the newest and hottest trends in beer. Flagships styles like pale ale, IPA, brown ale, witbier, etc., are usually the bulk of sales for many breweries, and those sales keep the lights on and the wort boiling.
So, it only seemed natural to test our knowledge of flagship beers by picking an assortment of styles from different well-known breweries. Without giving up any spoilers (spoiler photo below!), it’s more difficult than you might think to breakdown a flagship beer that you’ve probably had many times before. Flagship beers need to appeal to a massive audience of drinkers with different tastes and preferences, while still standing out as a beer that’s unique to the brewery who made it. Not only is crafting a beer to meet that criteria difficult, but it’s equally, if not more difficult to make it stand out and be recognizable.
During the tasting, we talk to Tim and Kyle about the history of Untappd, John’s history with Tim and New Brew Thursday, and even get a little bit of some behind-the-scenes info on the Untappd app.
